FAQs
What is woodturning?
Woodturning is an art form where a piece of wood is rotated on a machine called a lathe, and special tools are used to shape the wood into various objects such as bowls, vases, pens, or decorative items. The wood is spun rapidly, and the woodturner carefully carves and shapes it using cutting tools to create different designs and forms.
How long does it take to make a bowl?
Typically, it takes several months from the time the wood is harvested until it's ready to be turned into a bowl, as the wood needs to dry properly to avoid cracking and splitting. Once the wood is dry and ready for turning, the time it takes to make a bowl can vary based on factors such as size, complexity, and the drying process used. On average, however, the actual turning process for a bowl can take a few hours, up to a few days to complete, depending on the specific requirements of the project.
How do you prevent the wood from cracking?
To prevent the wood from cracking and splitting, I use properly seasoned wood and employ various drying techniques to reduce moisture content gradually. Additionally, I may seal the wood with appropriate finishes to minimize moisture absorption and apply techniques such as rough turning and drying in controlled environments to minimize the risk of cracking and splitting.
Can I commission a custom piece from you?
Yes, I can create custom woodturned pieces according to your specifications and preferences. Please feel free to share your ideas, and we can discuss how to bring them to life through woodturning.
